Nocturne for broken vocal cords is part of Sergiu Matis’ “Noise Nocturnes”, a series of performances and texts that revisit the romantic genre in its fascination for the night and darkness, imitating nature and flirting with folklore.
The massive blocks of acoustic and motoric noise, as well as the abundance of recycled texts
spoken at high speed or shouted, constitute the dense score of the nocturne. Choreographic tools applied to movement and voice make navigation possible through the overload of glitched and fragmented moves and sounds, by supporting chaos with coherence.
Intense shouting transforms the voice into a hopeless and hurtful tune.

Sergiu Matis
Sergiu Matis is a Romanian choreographer living and working in Berlin since 2008. His choreographic language moves with urgency and precision, with a distinctive blend of physical intensity, conceptual clarity, and meticulous research that explores how dance can resonate with contemporary realities. His performances have been presented throughout Europe, including at ImPulsTanz (Vienna), Centre National de la Danse (Paris), PACT Zollverein (Essen), Trafó (Budapest), CNDB The National Centre for Dance (Bucharest).
Angela Conquet
Angela Conquet is a French-Australian dance curator, writer, editor, researcher and translator of Romanian origin, living between Melbourne and France. Her career spans three continents - Europe, Australia and Canada - as well as a wide range of disciplines, contexts and territories. Her particular expertise lies in connecting artists’ ideas with current social issues and with diverse communities of thought.
She was Artistic Director of Dancehouse in Melbourne from 2011 to 2020 and curator of the Dance in Vancouver Festival in 2021. She is currently the Forum Programme Coordinator for the Lyon Dance Biennale.
