Created by dance critic Rosita Boisseau and filmmaker Valérie Urréa, the documentary brings together excerpts from performances and interviews with Angelin Preljocaj, Christian Bourigault, Dimitri Chamblas, Mark Tompkins, François Verret, Alain Buffard, Kader Belarbi, Josef Nadj, Philippe Decouflé, among others. These male figures of dance appear one after another on screen. The result of an extensive period of reflection and research, the project by Rosita Boisseau and Valérie Urréa combines performance excerpts and interviews revolving around the same central question: what does it mean to be a man in the world of dance?
The documentary gradually develops its discourse from a coherent perspective. By interviewing these “men who shape contemporary dance” established performers and choreographers around the same theme, Rosita Boisseau reveals a double movement of reflection. How do male choreographers confront this issue in their artistic practice? Do they attempt to move beyond gender stereotypes?
The artists invited to explore this subject, which is rarely addressed in dance, speak about a process of reflection that begins in the intimate sphere and is transformed into an act of creation. Between carefully selected images from performances, each artist expresses, in his own way, a personal perspective on the subject: from the quality of gesture and the play with stereotypes to the imprint of cultural identity and the figure of the father.
